Twenty-four hours after the Prime Minister called a General Election for 4th July, Joe Robertson, Conservative MP candidate for Isle of Wight East, hit the campaign trail in Ryde. Starting out from Eastern Gardens, 16 local campaigners knocked on doors including in Dover Street and Monkton Street. Joe grew up in St Helens and went to school in Ryde and said that as the biggest town on the Island, and in the new East Wight constituency, Ryde was the obvious place to kick his campaign off.
“I have been knocking on doors and speaking to resident’s in Ryde since last summer. When the Prime Minister called the election yesterday, Ryde was the obvious place to come to and get the campaign started. On the doorstep we discussed our shared priorities for improving community care, supporting local schools and promoting business and jobs. I also talked about my campaign to get CCTV installed in central Ryde, monitored by police, so that they can respond and tackle crime as it is unfolding.”
Local Ryde Councillors Warren Drew and Vanessa Churchman are backing Joe to become the new MP for Isle of Wight East.
