Joe Robertson MP Highlights the Growing Sector on the Isle of Wight and Calls for Increased Support.
Joe Robertson MP, who is Shadow PPS to the Department for Culture, Media and Tourism, championed the importance of creative industries, both on the Isle of Wight and nationally, during a recent speech in the General Debate on Creative Industries.
Speaking to the Minister, Robertson highlighted the vibrant, growing creative sector on the Isle of Wight, a small but thriving community contributing significantly to the local economy. Joe acknowledged the Ministers support for creative sector but stressed that continued and increased Government backing is essential for growth and sustainability.
Joe said, "Now, clearly there is a consensus in this House, across all benches, that the creative sector is hugely important and needs continued support from government. From 2010 to 2022, it was one of the fastest growing sectors in the UK economy growing by 50%. Now, clearly there is a consensus in this House, across all benches, that the creative sector is hugely important and needs continued support from government. From 2010 to 2022, it was one of the fastest growing sectors in the UK economy growing by 50%. But we cannot take for granted, and neither can we ignore, the damaging effects of decisions made in this budget. And it was entirely right that my Right Honourable friend, the Secretary, Shadow Secretary of State, raised that issue from the despatch box."
Joe emphasised that the Isle of Wight, known for its picturesque landscapes and historic locations, is increasingly becoming a hub for film. Notable sites, such as Osborne House have attracted film crews for productions based on the life of Queen Victoria. Joe also pointed out the vital role played by small creative organisations, such as Ventnor Exchange, Monkton Arts and the Department in Ryde, which has received funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Joe Robertson continues to advocate for the creative sector, including the governments initiative to discuss the potential Film Studio in Medina, in the neighbouring constituency of West Wight. He also pointed out the challenges faced by medium-sized creative projects, such as rural film studios, in accessing funding and resources compared to small scale or national initiatives.
